Etiology
  • Pathologic or physiologic causes that result in increased energy requirements or decreased ability to consume sufficient energy (ie increased nutrient needs due to catabolic illness)
  • Lack of access to food or artificial nutrition (economic, cultural, or religious)
  • Food and nutrition related knowledge deficit
  • Psychological causes (depression or disordered eating)
 
S/S:
  • Weight loss
  • Poor dentition
  • Reports/Observations of insufficient energy intake compared to estimated requirements or measured metabolic rate
  • Reports/Observations of restriction or omission of energy dense foods
  • Reports/Observations of food avoidance or lack of interest in food
  • Reports/Observations of inability to independently consume foods
  • Reports/Observations of PN/EN insufficient to meet needs based on estimated or measured RMR
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol/drugs that decrease hunger
